View Full Version : Signal Light Issue.

I put this here cause it seemed the only appropriate forum for a wiring issue.

My signal lights in the 1981 Civic I just bought quit on me.

The four ways still work, so I know the 4 bulbs didn't simultaneously burst.
I checked the fuse for both the 4 ways and the signal lights, and neither has any sign of being blown. Infact, I checked all the fuses and they're all good.

I then pulled the steering column apart and checked out the connectors, which appear fine, but I really don't know how an '81 Civic signal light assembly should look....

A shop will bill me at least 75 bucks for an hour just to look, and then parts and repair.

Anybody on this board got some ideas on how to diagnose the issue, and maybe somebody want to help me out?

I'm taking the car to Calgary leaving on Saturday, and I'd kinda like signal lights. The car is mint and has zero issues aside from this!

Thanks.

some cars have a separate flasher relay for the 4 ways and signals, maybe the one for the signals is burnt out. it should be in your fuse box somewhere, measure on either side of it with a multimeter (if you have one) and make sure that there is voltage going in and flashing voltage going out.

if there is voltage going in and none coming out then that's your problem.

also try replacing the fuse even though it looks good, once in a while they'll look fine but still be blown, it's happened to me before.

Does the relay look like a small white box?

There are two of those on the fuse panel, which I suspected at the time could be it, but didn't really know. I try to do all my own car work, but electronics is a bit foreign to me.

Thanks

Turn your fourways on, and then open the fusebox. You will hear the little flasher relay clicking. Put your finger on it, and shut off the 4 ways. Then, turn on your turnsignal, and see if it clicks once, then stops, or listen for a click from the one next to it. You should hear 1 click, and nothing more. Replace the one that does the one click, it'll cost you about $8 at Crappy tire. DO NOT LET CRAPPY TIRE REPLACE IT FOR YOU!!!!!

Perfect, that's exactly the info I need.

And hell no, Canadian Tire will never touch any car I ever own, not even for tires. I trust them as far as I could pick up my car and throw it.

If anyone cares, the problem is solved. It was the relay. CarQuest hooked me up with one, as Canadian Tire tried to tell me they didn't sell them (lol) even though they were on the shelf behind the guy and I could see them!! (LOL!)

Cost me 9 bucks and two minutes of my time.
