View Full Version : Why Stock/Heavy Rims Suck...

So as per the title... Tuesday night I go down to the shop to remove my volk te37s and throw on my stockers. So for the last, oh month or so, my rear passenger side wheel bearing has had a very very low-pitch whine sound (could hardly even hear it) so I didnt plan on changing it simply due to the fact that the car would be coming off the road this month anyhow...
So, I removed the Volks and had the stockers on, I leave the shop and get onto the expressway, approx 70kph all I hear is this insane grinding coming from the right rear wheel so I punch it up to 120kph and the sound was drowning out my radio! so I pull off the expressway right away to see wtf is up (cant put a rim on backwards, lol and I always torque my lug nuts).
Friggin heavy ass Rims broke the inner bearing race... and $50 says if I would have left the Volks on, it wouldnt have broke quite yet... lol

haha, like Joey said below you, its my "check to see whats going on method" if I go faster and the noise gets worse then I know its a serious problem...
I came from racing MX so I'm use to breaking/wrecking things and honestly, if you suspect something is wrong, (personally) I'd rather beat on it and found out right then and there if its gonna hold together or blow apart :D
yeah, you are lucky the bearing didn't just sease on you
that would not be pretty

mr. lube left the drain plug out....no knocking...nothing but a red oil light less than two seconds before it blew up....and it lugged a bit when the oil light came on...
it was neat...closed the 401!
mr lube ftl!
lol, i wanna do somethign that will cause 401 to close and not be responsible for it!!!
but damn man, battery in the face, that's harsh, hope you healed allrite

lol..no i bought the car for $2k from my grandma and got $6700 for it from insurance..that calmed me down a bit...lol
so i got ITB's for the lexus v8 in my other one...then spun a rod bearing and spent the rest on building a new motor...which i still have...
and i think u misread it..or i was being a clot....i didnt get the battery in the face...it blew up as i was lugging my hockey stuff beside the burning mass of toyota...
but i've done my own oil changes since then and have yet to have a vehicle explode in a ball of fire! lol...

This "check if shits broken method" has been used twice in my mx3, and has reulted in one klze with a rod through the side and a tranny with a case split in half.

When it comes to motor noises, I dont do the 'check if shits broken method'. not with the mazda anyways. now with the cavalier, you're fuckgin right I do.

Beating the crap out of my car is usually my method of 'checking to see if it's fixed' not 'if it's broken'. Doing that can only lead to worse situation.

Meeh, if you make it worse it just usually means a chance to upgrade!

please explain how a heavier rim is going to worsen a wheel bearing problem
makes no sense to me

rotational mass... same way a light rim can increase acceleration (less load) so with heavy rims you increase the load or amount of rotantional mass on the bearing...
so if its already on its way out and you increase the weight/load on it, it will obviously speed up the process of it wearing.
another example is you have a main bearing in the motor going or a rod bearing (you can hear it) so instead of fixing it, you turn the boost up (increasing the load on the bearing) well odds of that bearing letting go has just increased.
